ASUSTEK Computer Inc. (ASUS) is a Taiwan-based multinational company that produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases and computer cooling systems. Best known for its massive motherboard production, the company provides its manufacturing services to computer equipment vendors such as Hewlett Packard and IBM. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers, including Sony (PlayStation 2), Apple (iPod, iPod Shuffle, MacBook), Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Palm and HP’s Compaq brand. ASUS is one of the main supporters of Intel’s Common Building Block initiatives. In 2007, one in three desktop PCs sold was powered by an ASUS motherboard.
The company is principally engaged in the provision of computers, communications and consumer electronics solutions, offering laptops, motherboards, PC, broadband products, graphics cards, 3D graphics display cards, LCD monitors, mobile phones, pocket PCs, server motherboards, server systems, computer accessories and peripherals.
ASUS was founded in 1989 in Taipei. In early 2008, ASUS spun off its contract manufacturing services businesses into two wholly owned subsidiaries, Pegatron Technology and Unihan Technology. Following the spin-off, ASUS retained its branded IT product lines.
