Autoliv Inc.
Company Snapshot
Company Overview
Autoliv’s principal activities are developing and manufacturing integrated safety systems for major global automotive manufacturers. The company develops, manufactures and markets airbags, seatbelts, steering wheels, passive safety electronics and active safety systems (e.g., radar, night vision, camera vision). It also produces anti-whiplash systems, pedestrian protection systems and integrated child seats.
Autoliv operates in more than 29 countries. Its largest customers include Ford, Renault and General Motors. The company primarily markets its products in North America, Japan, Europe and the APAC region.
In the late 1980s. Autoliv developed an automatic seatbelt to satisfy a U.S. regulation for passive restraint systems. The company began producing its own airbag inflators in bulk in 1991. It introduced the first non-azide inflator the following year and also began producing its own airbag electronics. A number of developments in side airbags were rolled out during the 1990s. By 1993, Autoliv had manufacturing operations in 10 countries concentrated in Europe, which accounted for 91% of sales. It also was involved in more than a dozen joint ventures. Toward the end of 1994, Autoliv opened a new plant in Sweden to produce hybrid gas generators for airbags. These products were less expensive to manufacture and were safer, as they deployed in two stages, the first of which corrected the occupant’s seating position.
