1925 The Holt Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Co. merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Co. and C.L. Best was appointed its first chairman.
1928 The company made its first acquisition by purchasing Russell Grader Manufacturing Company.
1931 The company started the production of its first diesel engine, D9900.
1950 The company formed its first overseas subsidiary in England, Caterpillar Tractor Co. Ltd.
1981 Caterpillar acquired Solar Turbines International, which designs and manufactures industrial gas turbines.
1998 The company launched the world's giant mechanically driven mining truck, the 797.
1998 Caterpillar acquired Varity Perkins and renamed Perkins Engines Company Ltd. in England.
2006 Caterpillar acquired Progress Rail Services Inc., a railroad and transit system product and service supplier headquartered in Albertville, Alabama, for $1 billion.
2008 Caterpillar acquired Shandong SEM Machinery, a Chinese manufacturer of wheel loaders. 
2010 Caterpillar acquired Electro-Motive Diesel, a manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive products, and diesel engines for the rail industry, from Greenbriar, Berkshire, for $820 million.
2011 The company acquired Bucyrus International, Inc., in 2011 for $7.6 billion, the biggest acquisition in its history, to expand its product and service range and meet mining customers' needs.
2021 To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the company acquired Enhanced Energy Group, Inc., which operates as “CarbonPoint Solutions,” a U.S.-based carbon capture technology company headquartered in Rhode Island.
2022 Caterpillar expanded its construction industry portfolio with four battery electric machines, including battery prototypes, at Bauma 2022, Oct. 24-30 in Munich, Germany. The battery electric machine prototypes include the 301.9 mini excavator, 320 medium excavator, 950 GC medium wheel loader, and 906 compact wheel loader. 
2022 The company collaborated with Luck Stone, a family-owned and operated producer of crushed stone, sand, and gravel, to deploy Caterpillar’s autonomous solution to Luck Stone’s Bull Run Plant in Chantilly, Virginia.
2023 Albemarle Corp., a provider of essential elements for mobility, energy, connectivity, and health, collaborated with Caterpillar Inc. on solutions to support the complete circular battery value chain and sustainable mining operations.
2024 The company signed a strategic electrification agreement with CRH to advance the deployment of Caterpillar’s zero-exhaust emissions solutions. The deal is focused on accelerating the deployment of Caterpillar’s 70 to 100-ton-class battery electric off-highway trucks and charging solutions at a CRH site in North America.
