Company Overview

Essity was originally called SCA and was founded in 1929. In 2017, SCA acquired BSN Medical, a leading supplier of medical dressings. SCA was then split into two companies: the forest products company, SCA, and the hygiene and health company, Essity.

Essity operates in three business segments: Personal Care, Consumer Tissue and Professional Hygiene. In the Medical Solutions division of Personal Care, Essity provides wound care compression garments and wound dressings. Cutimed and Leukoplast are its wound care brands. The Leukoplast range of products include dressings for minor wounds. Cutimed, its AWC brand, includes products for management of wound beds, infections, exudate and tissue.

Through the acquisition of Abigo Medical AB in January 2020, Essity added Sorbact technology for AWC to its portfolio. Sorbact technology reduces bioburden in wounds without using any chemically or pharmacologically active substances such as antiseptics or other toxic substances. Essity’s Cutimed Sorbact non-medicated wound contact dressings include Cutimed Sorbact, Cutimed Sorbact Gel and Cutimed Sorbact Hydroactive. These dressings use a natural mode of action using a hydrophobic coating made from dialkylcarbamoylchloride (DACC) to bind microorganisms to their surface. When the dressing is changed, the micro-organisms are removed, and the bioburden is decreased. Cutimed Sorbact dressings provide an alternative to silver, iodine, PHMB and other antimicrobial agents.
