1927 Nel was established with its first electrolyser installation at Notodden, Norway. Testing for pure hydrogen to fertilizer production.
1940 The company has installed the world's largest water electrolysers at Rjukan, Norway, with a total hydrogen production capacity exceeding 30.000 Nm3/hour, from hydropower.
1953 It has started second large scale hydropowered electrolyser plant for supplying hydrogen to ammonia production, in Glomfjord, Norway.
1959 Nel has completely redesigned the electrolyser unit, forming the basis for today's atmospheric electrolyser.
1974 Companies electrolyser technology made available for other companies and other industries.
1988 The world's first electrolyser supplier to provide non-asbestos alkali electrolysers.
2001 Nel has introduced the first pressurised electrolyser to the market.
2003 It has opened the world's first publicly available hydrogen fueling station in Reykjavik, Iceland.
2014 Nel became the first hydrogen company listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
2015 It has acquired H2 Logic, adding hydrogen fueling technology to the product portfolio.
2017 The company has acquired Proton OnSite, adding PEM electrolysis technology to its product portfolio, becoming the world's largest electrolyser company.
2018 Completed the construction of world's largest manufacturing plant for hydrogen fueling stations, with a capacity of 300 units per year.
2020 Nel opens the first H2Station in Korea.
2022 It has started the world's largest electrolyser manufacturing plant, increasing its annual alkaline production capacity to 500MW.
2024 Nel's Fueling division is spun out and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange as Cavendish Hydrogen - creating two completely independent pure-play companies.
