Company Overview

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is a Japanese multinational vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Nishi-ku, Yokohama. Nissan, Infiniti and Datsun are the company's automotive brands, with Nismo branding in-house performance tuning items (including cars). The Nissan zaibatsu, currently known as Nissan Group, dates to the turn of the twentieth century.

Nissan has been a member of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance (Mitsubishi joined in 2016), a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and Renault of France, since 1999. Renault owns a 43.4% voting stake in Nissan, while Nissan owns a 15% non-voting stake in Renault as of 2013. Nissan has had a 34% controlling share in Mitsubishi Motors since October 2016.

After Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Ford, Nissan was the sixth-largest carmaker in 2013. The Renault–Nissan Alliance was the world's fourth-largest carmaker when combined. Nissan is the most famous Japanese brand in China, Russia, and Mexico. Nissan was the largest automaker in North America in 2014. Nissan was the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in April 2018, with over 320,000 all-electric vehicles sold worldwide. The Nissan LEAF is the company's best-selling completely electric vehicle, coming in second only to the Tesla Model 3 in global sales.

Nissan withdrew all its operations from the South Korean market because of low sales caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. In December 2020, Nissan Korea shut down all its operations in Korea, including its premium brand Infiniti. Due to the Korean consumer boycott of Japanese cars, Nissan Korea's sales performance in 2019 was worse than in 2018. Sales declined from 5,053 units in 2018 to 3,049 units in 2019, excluding the Infiniti brand. In the first four months of 2020, the company sold 813 units. Infiniti, Nissan's luxury brand, sold only 56 vehicles in April of 2021.
