1946 Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp.) in Nihombashi, Tokyo.
1950 Sony Group Corp. launched its first GT-3, a G-Type magnetic tape recorder, also known as the G model, which costs approximately $450 per unit.
1955 Sony Group Corp. launched its first TR-55 transistor radio, becoming the first company to manufacture transistors and other components required for developing the radio.
1960 Sony established its wholly-owned subsidiary, Sony Corporation of America (SCA), in the U.S.
1966 Sony Group Corp. has opened its facility in Ginza, Tokyo, which has become its information hub and community spot.

2004 Sony Financial Holdings Inc., currently Sony Financial Group Inc., was established as one of the first financial holding companies offering both insurance and banking services through its three subsidiaries, Sony Life, Sony Assurance, and Sony Bank, which was founded in Japan.
2006 Sony launched a digital single-lens camera called "Alpha." Under this sub-brand, the company will produce an end-to-end camera system of accessories and lenses to accelerate improved photography.
2007 Sony Financial Holdings Inc., which includes Sony Life Insurance Co., Ltd., Sony Assurance Inc., and Sony Bank Inc., has listed its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The company plans to develop, design, manufacture, and market advanced medical products such as surgical endoscopes and associated systems. It plans to establish a new medical and imaging systems solutions business to provide complete solutions for operating rooms globally.
2018 The company has launched ERS-1000 (Aibo), an autonomous entertainment robot developed to connect people in the home.
2021 Sony Financial Holdings was renamed Sony Financial Group Inc. to achieve further growth and strengthen governance within its financial services business, thereby enhancing the corporate value of Sony Group Corp overall.
2022 Sony Group Corp. launched SFA (Life Sciences Cloud Platform), a cloud-based flow cytometry data analysis solution that can rapidly identify rare cells, such as cancer cells and stem cells, among multiple cell populations utilizing data obtained from flow cytometers.
2023 Sony Group Corp. established Sony Research Inc. as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Sony Research will undertake research and development of disruptive technologies and will focus on Sensing, AI, and Virtual Spaces.
2024 Sony Corp. developed an immersive spatial content creation system. It includes an X.R. head-mounted display, a video see-through function, and a pair of controllers optimized for intuitive interaction with 3D objects and precise pointing. The system also aims to support creators in advanced 3D content creation.
