1985 Dr. Swanson was awarded grants from the Electric Power Research Institute and the U.S. Department of Energy to support his solar power explorations. With the help of these funds and his financial support from two venture capital companies, he founded SunPower Corp.
1990 SunPower received initial funding from Associate Venture Investors and Technology Funding and an R&D contract from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The company's solar technology was used to power advanced applications for solar power race cars and airplanes.
2002 Cypress Semiconductor invested $8 million in SunPower Corp., with an option to increase its stake.
2007 SunPower acquired PowerLight, forming a vertically integrated company serving the residential, commercial, and utility-scale power plant markets.
2011 SunPower launched the C7 Tracker, which concentrates the sun's power seven times to achieve the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility-scale solar power plants.
2013 SunPower acquired Greenbotics Inc. to provide robotic solar panel cleaning products and services for large-scale solar power plants.
2014 SunPower acquired SolarBridge Technologies Inc. for high-performance microinverter technology, delivering system design flexibility and lower installation costs.
2016 SunPower reinvents home solar, introducing the SunPower Equinox system, the first residential solar solution with every significant component designed and engineered to work together seamlessly.
2017 SunPower launched EDDiE, an advanced digital sales application and design engine for home solar, to eliminate the complexity of buying and selling solar and offer a dynamic way to customize solar systems.
2019 The company launched SunPower Design Studio, which allows future homeowners to create custom solar designs instantly and improves customer experiences.
2020 The company introduced the OneRoof system, an efficient, durable, cost-effective solar roofing product ideal for the new-home market.
2024 SunPower Corp. entered into an asset purchase agreement with Complete Solaria Inc. to serve as the Stalking Horse Buyer for the assets associated with SunPower's Blue Raven Solar business, New Homes business, and non-installing Dealer network.
