1874 Ferdinand Tiemann and Wilhelm Haarmann, the local chemists, developed their first vanillin factory in Holzminden, Germany.   
1919 Carl-Wilhelm Gerberding and August Bellmer founded Dragoco, one of the leading suppliers of fine perfume compositions, aroma chemicals, and cosmetic raw materials.
1954 Bayer AG, a life science, pharmaceuticals, and chemical company, acquired Haarmannn & Reimer, which continued to operate as an entity.
2003 Symrise was established by the merger of Haarmann & Reimer and Dragoco, based in Holzminden, Germany.
2005 The company expanded its natural vanilla business by integrating Aromatics S.A.S., a French-Malagasy company, to form a sustainable vanilla value creation chain.
2013 The company acquired Belmay, an American fragrance manufacturer, taking a significant step towards sustainable growth in the fragrance, personal care, and air care segment.
2016 The company acquired Rennesenz as part of Pinova Holdings to expand its Aroma Molecules division.
